Journalism Students Learn from Leading Business Newsrooms

Journalism and Mass Communication majors Ashley Bailey, Karina Gonzalez, Lye Landau, Tristan Pulido and Sara Wilmot have been accepted to attend a highly-competitive business journalism conference in New York taking place in October.

Undergraduates and master's degree students from around the country applied for the conference, which guarantees the attending students at least two interviews with business journalism organizations such as Bloomberg News, Reuters, Dow Jones and American City Business Journals. Students will also meet with the New York Times and Associated Press editors and tour the new Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones and Marketwatch newsrooms.

During the conference, students will interview a CEO, research the executive's company and write a news story, which will be judged by a panel of business journalists and professors. The best stories will receive awards.

Fortune magazine senior editor at large Allan Sloan is the conference keynote speaker.

Journalism Club adviser Prof. Vicky Sama, who helped HSU students with their applications and wrote all their recommendations letters, will attend the conference as well. She was instrumental in helping HSU students win more than one slot to the conference. The conference organizer says HSU will have the largest contingent of students, except for the hosting university.
