Campus Dialogue on Race Looks Ahead at HSU's Next Century

Award-winning filmmaker Leah Mahan is the featured speaker at the annual Campus Dialogue on Race, which takes place Oct. 28 to Nov. 7 on the HSU campus. In her keynote address on Monday, Nov. 3, Mahan will screen her acclaimed film "Come Hell or Highwater: Battle for Turkey Creek" and lead a discussion exploring the intersections between race and environment. The presentation is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Founders Hall 118.

Stephen L. Hupp, writing in Library Journal, describes “Come Hell or High Water” as “a powerful film for all those interested in social and environmental justice.”

Mahan is also known for “Sweet Old Song” (2002), “Gaining Ground” (2013), and “Holding Ground: The Rebirth of Dudley Street” (1996). Mahan is an independent documentary filmmaker whose work has been nominated by the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Directorial Achievement. She is a Film Envoy for the American Film Showcase and has been a fellow at the Sundance Institute Documentary Editing and Story Lab.

The Campus Dialogue on Race is an annual event at HSU that invites students, staff, faculty, administrators, and community members to present and attend programs that relate to racial justice and its intersections with all forms of oppression and resistance. This year’s dialogue presents workshops and discussions that explore what the future holds for HSU as it heads into its second century. Under the umbrella theme of “HSU’s 101st Year: What Now? Continuing our Conversations on Race,” the Dialogue’s events focus on queer people of color, social stigma of being an “illegal” in America, the history of Native peoples, coalition building, what sports mascots say about culture, and more.

Tim’m West, a former HSU lecturer and current managing director of Teach for America’s LGBTQ Initiative, presents a pair of lectures in Goodwin Forum on Monday Nov. 3. West presents “Pre]dispositions: Continuing a Legacy of Intersectional Queer Bodies of Work” at 11 a.m., and at 2 p.m. West delivers “The State of Education in LGBTQ America: Advancing Educational Equity for LGBTQ Kids.”

With Humboldt State recently receiving HSI designation, Ruiz will discuss the responsibility of education in the future of the Chican@/Latin@ population.

On Wednesday, Professor Cesar Abarca from the Dept. of Social Work, presents the workshop “2014 Four Directions Intergenerational Dialogue: A Case Study.” Abarca will present lessons learned from the Los Jardines Institute, including the LJI’s models of intergenerational organizing.

On Thursday, Melissa Meiris and Radha Webley, of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, will present “What Does the Data Tell Us? Interpreting and Understanding the 2014 Cultivating Diversity Report.” The question and answer session will delve into how the report has evolved over the years and the role it plays in university affairs.

The week closes with a series of events on Friday beginning with Alexia Siebhur and Jamaeca Dedrick’s workshop “Queer Woman of Color: An Intersectional Feminist Perspective on Social Position and Avenues of Oppression,” at 11 a.m. in Goodwin Forum.
