Muddy Mic Night Supports Student Performers

Humboldt State has come up with a new way for students to have fun—and express themselves—on Friday night.

HSU students can now bring their music, poetry and other artistic skills to Muddy Mic Night, a free open mic night held at Muddy Waters in the Depot. The weekly event gives students from all majors a place to jam and to showcase their talents. They can also enjoy a warm beverage, and get valuable experience performing before a crowd.

HSU students love the arts,” said Molly Kresl, Clubs & Activities coordinator. “This is just another opportunity—like Arts on the Quad and the Canyon Music Jam—for students to meet people, make new friends and get involved on campus.”

During the event, Muddy Waters transforms into an intimate but casual venue with a sound system and performing area. Recently, there were more than 60 attendees and over a dozen performers.

“The room is so small, it’s a great way to get your feet wet in a comfortable, accepting environment,” said Jeremy Rodda (’17, Business), a self-taught guitarist and vocalist. Over the course of the evening, he performed two Coldplay songs and a few original pieces to enthusiastic applause.

“I’ve done it twice now and it’s a great way to get into music and get used to performing before a crowd,” Rodda said. “Performing can be scary at first and events like this are the perfect venue to meet people and work out your jitters.”

Muddy Mic Night is held every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Muddy Waters in the Depot. Muddy Waters stays open for the duration of the event, serving coffee and other beverages. No sign-up is necessary.

Student clubs or organizations interested in collaborating on the event to promote their own programming should contact Molly Kresl at molly.kresl@humboldt.edu or (707) 826-6012.
