College of Professional Studies at HSU is hosting an awards reception April 19 honoring community partners and students who have demonstrated excellence in academics and community service.

College of Professional Studies at HSU is hosting an awards reception April 19 honoring community partners and students who have demonstrated excellence in academics and community service.

The annual awards caremeony recognizes the strong link between the community-at-large and the departments and programs within the College. Susan Higgins, dean of the College, said the awards "exemplify the commitment of the College to human and economic development and to the realization of human potential through scholarship, service and collaboration."

The roster of Community Partners and the nominating departments is: Applied Technology Department--Dan Johnson, president, Chris Dart, vice president of operations, Danco Construction; School of Business—David Vallerga, financial consultant, A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc.; Child Development—Marcellene Norton, education director, Hoopa Valley Tribe; Economics—Dan Ihara, Global Warming Policy Director, Center for Environmental Economic Development; Special Education—Bill Christensen, retired Special Education Program Supervisor and school psychiatrist; Liberal Studies Elementary Education—Karen Simmons, Pamela Guttero, Jacoby Creek School; Indian Teacher and Educational Personnel Program—Jim McQuillen, Director of Education, Yurok Tribe; Kinesiology--Barbara Bryant, Commissioner, Humboldt County Film Commission; Recreation Administration—Julie Sessa, Humboldt Area Agency on Aging; Social Work—Chag Lowry, Native Cultures Fund, Humboldt Area Foundation.
