Construction Advisory

The campus community should be aware of traffic impacts and pedestrian detours related to the construction of the new College Creek Apartments and the rebuilding of the soccer field.

Expected Closures and Detours

• Harpst Street will reopen as a one-lane, one-way, eastbound only, entrance into the campus effective Tuesday morning 01/20/09. It will be limited to motor vehicle and bicycle traffic only, and will remain one-way 24 hours a day. Pedestrians walking to campus should choose entrance points north of Harpst Street, or enter the campus on B Street from 14th Street.

• Harpst Street will not allow westbound vehicles to return to L.K. Wood Blvd; motorists leaving the south parts of campus should choose B Street or Union Street to get to 14th Street.

• College Walk is closed to pedestrian traffic from 14th Street to Rossow Street. Pedestrians should choose alternate paths of travel in and out of the campus north of Harpst Street, or on the B Street sidewalk between Laurel Drive and 14th Street.

• Harpst Street between B Street and Rossow Street will remain two-way. This will allow motorists to access and leave the main Mai Kai lot, the SBSB-Gist Staff lot, and the Harry Griffith lot, all of which are open.

The University has opened gates to allow limited motor vehicle traffic between the Library parking lot and the west end of Laurel Drive. Motorists must use caution and watch for pedestrians in this area.

Motorists should expect periodic delays, especially in the afternoon as vehicles line up to leave the campus via B Street and Plaza Avenue/Library Circle.

Remember that you can take the bus. All matriculated, fee-paying students are automatically entitled to use their “Jack Pass” privilege to ride any Arcata Transit, Eureka Transit, or Redwood Transit bus at no charge, simply by swiping their current HSU identification card on the card reader as they enter the bus. This effectively makes much of the Arcata-Eureka-McKinleyville area into a huge “park and ride” option, and it helps save the planet. There are even express shuttle busses operating between the campus and Sunnybrae, and north from HSU to Valley West. Staff and faculty can purchase the Jack Pass privilege for Spring ’09 for $60 at the Cashier’s window on the second floor of SBSB. More info about bus schedules and the Jack Pass can be found at the Parking site.

The University and Brown Construction are working as hard as possible to make these impacts as brief and minimal as possible, but a project of the scale of College Creek Apartments is tricky to manage in the limited space available to move around.
