First Street Gallery Unveils Two Exhibits

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery is announcing the unveiling of two new exhibits: "3 Figurative Artists: Drawings and Paintings by Robert Burroughs, Theresa Oats and Jonnie Russell," and a faculty and staff exhibition showcasing the talent of the artists who teach and work in Humboldt State University's Art Department. Both exhibits run August 29 through September 23, 2006.

“Students benefit greatly from the broad and diverse artistic backgrounds of the staff and faculty of the HSU Art Department,” said Jack Bentley, Director of the First Street Gallery. “The faculty-staff exhibition demonstrates how Humboldt State’s art department provides students with practical, living models of individual success in the art world while also providing the critical abilities to understand and interpret a variety of practices in the visual arts.”

Viewers will see a wide range of themes and styles, including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, jewelry, metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

The “3 Figurative Artists” exhibition, however, displays on a consistent theme – the human figure as an artistic subject – via a variety of drawing and painting styles. Robert Burroughs, Theresa Oats and Jonnie Russell all reside in Northern California.

A special reception for the featured artists will be held Saturday, September 2, from 6 to 9 p.m., during the monthly Eureka Arts Alive!.

First Street Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. and is located at 422 First Street in Eureka. Admission is free. Those planning group tours are encouraged to call ahead. For more information call 707-826-3424.
