Founders Day Offers Ways to Support Memorial Scholarships

Humboldt State University is making a special effort to raise funds for two new memorial scholarships this week until the end of Founders Day on Friday, April 25. The scholarships are named for the admissions counselor and two alumni who perished in the April 10 bus accident, and will support low-income and first-generation college students.

To support the cause, the HSU Advancement Foundation has committed up to $20,000 in the form of a matching challenge and a contribution for each attendee at Friday’s Dance of the Century.

The Foundation will match donations made to either of the two new memorial scholarships. The Arthur Arzola Memorial Scholarship honors the admissions counselor who worked passionately to help students get a college education. The Michael Myvette and Mattison Haywood Memorial Scholarship honors the recently engaged alumni couple who were chaperones on the bus. Gifts can be made online by following the links at humboldt.edu to alumni.humboldt.edu/giving/accident-memorial-scholarships, and more information is available at (707) 826-5101.

At the Dance of the Century—a free event from 8 p.m. to midnight in Lumberjack Arena—the Foundation will give $5 for each of the first 1,000 people who attend.

Individuals can also help by sharing the memorial scholarships link—alumni.humboldt.edu/giving/accident-memorial-scholarships Facebook, Twitter and other social media.
