HSU Boosts Financial Aid Process

Arcata – For the third year, Humboldt State University is partnering with California Cash for College, the California Student Aid Commission, Cal Grant Programs and local high schools for one-on-one assistance and online access to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) program, the initial student application to receive financial help.

Each Cash for College event offers local high school students the opportunity to enter a drawing to win a $1,000 scholarship, seven of which will be awarded in June.

Staff from HSU’s Financial Aid Office will be on hand to assist parents and students at meetings at four area schools from January 30 through February 6, as listed below. Eureka High School, Hoopa Valley High School and McKinleyville High School have already completed their events.

The meetings provide information about the basics of financial aid and about how to apply online. Financial Aid staff who are fluent in Spanish will be at the meetings and students and families are welcome to attend any of them.

To be eligible for the scholarship drawing, high school seniors must attend an event, fill-out an evaluation, and complete the FAFSA and Cal Grant GPA verification forms by the state deadline of March 2, 2008. Financial need is not a consideration for the scholarship, and eligible students will be selected randomly in late May. The scholarships can be used at either two- or four-year institutions.

Details are available from the high schools listed below. HSU’s Financial Aid Office is at 707/826-4321.
