HSU Cycling Rocks UC Berkeley

Humboldt State University’s cycling club scored eight victories in this weekend’s collegiate mountain bike races in the Bay Area. UC Berkeley hosted the events. On Sunday morning, HSU Cycling won three races in a row, starting with the Men’s C short track cross-country events. Andrew Spickerman took the early lead and was passed by a UC Berkeley rider heading into the last lap. But Spickerman stuck to his competition’s wheel and the two sprinted uphill to the finish line where Spickerman came through for the win.

Next, HSU’s Dylan Wright won the Men’s D short track race. And HSU’s Joe Mulleary won the Men’s B short track event to complete the one-two-three victories to start off the day. Alyssum Cohen came in second place in the Women’s A short track race. Thirteen cyclists with the HSU Cycling Club participated in the four different events of cross country, Super D, short track and dual slalom. More than 100 riders from Cal Poly, UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, University of Nevada/Reno and Chico State competed in the weekend mountain bike races.

On Sunday afternoon, HSU swept first place in dual slalom races at the Bailey Bike Park near Pittsburg. Jake Hinlicky won the Men’s B dual slalom and Nick Lohse won the Men’s D dual slalom.

Other notable finishes for HSU:

Ashley Hanson won the Women’s C cross country race on Saturday at Lake Sonoma. Hinklicky won the Men’s C cross-country race. Justin Graves got third place in the Men’s A Super D race, which had a running start where riders rush to pick up their bikes off the ground and race downhill for about five miles.

In addition to winning the dual slalom, Lohse also won the Super D Men’s D race on Saturday, while teammate Shaun Summa came in second place in the same event.

Mulleary got second place in the Men’s B dual slalom. Hansen finished second in the Women’s C Super D and Erika Mittermaier got fourth in that same event.
