HSU Expects Record Open House This Weekend

Humboldt State University’s annual open house, Spring Preview April 9 and 10, looks set to draw a record number of 700 prospective students, and more than a thousand family members and guests.

Principal events are slated from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, April 9, including university tours, classroom and department visits, city bus tours, forest hikes and mixers. Prospective students and families meet professors, learn about academic majors and on-campus services, familiarize themselves with the residence halls, meet with current students and learn about HSU’s scores of clubs and extracurricular activities. Friday’s extensive schedule includes drop-ins and guided tours of more than 40 academic departments.

Friday is the main segment of Spring Preview, but Saturday’s schedule includes drop-in office hours from 9 a.m. 1 p.m. at the Admissions Office in the first floor lobby of the Student Business Services Building, at Jolly Giant Commons and on Housing and Dining’s second floor.

Visitors can also see the university’s Telonicher Marine Laboratory in Trinidad; preview tours will be available Saturday at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Campus and housing tours are available Saturday and the University Bookstore will be open as well.

The Arcata Chamber of Commerce will host an Open House Saturday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the California Welcome Center, 1635 Herndon Road, on the outskirts of the village.

Preview attendees can register as walk-ins at an on-site registration desk. The fee is $15 per student, with a $25 maximum for all guests, student included.

Spring Preview attendance is not mandatory for prospective students. Student-guided tours are available on a regular basis Monday through Saturday and personal campus visits can be arranged via email at the Admissions Center at welcome@humboldt.edu or by dialing toll-free 866/850-9556.

Spring Preview is open to all prospective students, their families and guests, regardless if they have applied and been accepted for admission.

Parking is free to all Preview visitors both Friday and Saturday, except at parking meters marked ‘City of Arcata.’ Visitors are asked to park in General/Staff Lots or at any university parking meter.

Spring Preview is an Open House only, admission registration will not be available. Instead, applicants will be able to register at scheduled Humboldt Orientation Programs to be announced later in June, July and August.
