HSU Hosts Mideast Students in Environmental Study

As part of a U.S. State Department initiative, Humboldt State University is hosting 19 undergraduate student leaders from Jordan and the Palestinian territories in a summer program centered on the global environment.

Known officially as the Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders on Global Environmental Issues, the HSU program is designed to promote better understanding of the U.S. abroad. It encompasses U.S. history, government, and society for prospective world leaders who are also experiencing Arcata and its recreational opportunities.

The program is funded by a State Department grant under the auspices of the Fulbright-Hays Act, aimed at fostering “mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.”

Humboldt State’s course spans the U.S. environmental movement and policymaking; conservation of native species, communities, and ecosystems; water scarcity and sustainable water use; participation in a variety of service learning opportunities; and exchanges with the Redwood Coast’s state and national park officials.

The Study of the U.S. Institutes are designed and funded by the Study of the U.S. branch in the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participants are among more than 40,000 individuals enrolled annually in the department’s exchange programs. The bureau has funded and supported initiatives for more than 60 years to promote the comity of peoples. The bureau’s charter includes the Fulbright Program and the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. Details are at http://exchanges.state.gov/.
