HSU Mourns Death of Student

The Humboldt State University community was shocked and saddened following the suicide of a student sometime late Sunday evening or early Monday morning.

The student, who was a sophomore who lived off campus, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The student’s name is being withheld due to longstanding university policy.

The HSU Counseling Center is providing grief counseling for affected students, and has been actively working to locate friends and peers to offer services. Anyone who needs counseling services may contact the Center at (707) 826-3236.

Humboldt State staff have been in contact with family members and expressed sympathy on behalf of the campus. Public notification of the death was delayed until the family could make their way to Arcata.

The Arcata Police Department received the initial call about a possibly suicidal student, and sought assistance from Humboldt State police Sunday evening. A search by friends and police continued into the early morning. The student was found in the woods behind campus shortly after 1 a.m. Monday.
