HSU Music Season Flowers in April

April is the last full month of the University school year and the HSU Music Department has a crowded concert calendar, which will conclude the first weekend of May. Performances are based on the class work and experience HSU students gained throughout the academic year.

April is the last full month of the University school year and the HSU Music Department has a crowded concert calendar, which will conclude the first weekend of May. Performances are based on the class work and experience HSU students gained throughout the academic year.

Each concert begins at 8:00 p.m. with the exception of Sunday afternoon concerts on April 22 and 29, as noted below, in Fulkerson Recital Hall (except the Calypso Band on April 28, which is in the Van Duzer Theatre.) Ticket prices for all concerts are $6.00 general, $2 senior/student, and free to HSU students with ID.

On Sat., Apr. 7,the Humboldt Bay Brass concert features Renaissance and Baroque ensembles on period instruments, and classic American, English and Irish full band music.

Students of the HSU Opera Workshop present Henry Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aeneas, on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 13 and 14. The English opera is short, just under an hour, and perfect for student production.

On Fri., Apr 20, three Jazz Combos perform jazz classics and student originals. On Sat., Apr.21 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoon Apr. 22 at 3:00 p.m. the Humboldt Symphony performs an eclectic program that includes music by Wagner, Donizetti and John Williams, as well as the world premiere piece by concert master Halim Beere.

The HSU Symphonic Band performs on Fri., Apr. 27. On Sat. Apr. 28, the Percussion Ensemble will perform a program that includes John Cage and West African music, followed by the Calypso Band. As usual, this event will be in the Van Duzer Theatre.

On Sun., Apr. 29 at 3:00 p.m., singers from three university ensembles will present a variety of sacred and secular choral works. They are the Humboldt Chorale, the University Singers and a chamber group called, “The Ten.”

On Thurs., May 3, the AM Jazz Band performs. On Friday, May 4, the Madrigal Singers perform a program of a capella madrigals, funky jazz and music from the 1940s. This semester the group is all women. The MRT Singers will also perform blues, swing and ballads with instrumental jazz accompaniment.

The HSU concert season ends on Sat., May 5, when the Jazz Orchestra performs a program that includes music by Dave Holland, Gerald Wilson and Duke Ellington.
