HSU to Test New Emergency Alert System Oct. 2

Arcata, CA - Humboldt State University will conduct a test of its Emergency Alert-Information System on Thursday, October 2, from 10:45 until 11:00 a.m. The clocktower bells in the Quad will chime for the full 15 minutes. Registered cell phones will buzz with simulated text messages and bright red “Test Today” signs will be posted prominently across campus. Information also will be available at 826-INFO and http://www.humboldt.edu/emergency.

KHSU-FM 90.5 is will air announcements during Thursday’s 15-minute drill.

Recipients of text messages are urged to exercise the 826-INFO line and the web site so that authorities can evaluate the effectiveness of the system.

No evacuations will be conducted.

The same bell-ringing, text messages and alert signs would be deployed in the event of real emergency.

Thursday’s test will introduce the freshman class to the system; drills are carried out once a semester.

Instructions for registering cell phones to obtain emergency text messages are available at http://www.humboldt.edu/~its/services/webreg/textmessage.html. Users who have changed carriers should re-register.
