Humboldt State Hosts Kimchi Culture Festival

Kimchi-making demonstrations, traditional Korean music, dance, and a barbeque are all part of the Kimchi Culture Festival, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Kate Buchanan Room on the Humboldt State University campus.

Recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Activity, the free event will feature opportunities to make and sample Korea’s national dish of seasonings and fermented vegetables.

Kimchi comes in more than 50 flavors and during the event, attendees will have an opportunity to learn about and taste more than 20 varieties. More than 500 people are expected to attend, according to organizers.

“This is a chance for the community to come together and learn about Korean food, history and culture,” said Young Sub Kwon, a Kinesiology faculty member and one of the organizers.

At 11 a.m., attendees will have the opportunity to view a video on Korean food and culture and watch traditional dance and music from noon to 12:40 p.m. Performances will include Talchum (Korean mask dance), Daegeum (the bamboo flute) and Gayageum (Korean string instrument). Guests will have a chance to sample and make their own kimchi until 3 p.m. There will also be a free Korean barbeque.

The event is sponsored by HSU’s MultiCultural Center, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the Center of International Programs, and the College of Professional Studies.
