Spring Institute for Student Success Jan. 20

Humboldt State University will host its Spring Institute for Student Success Jan. 15 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Kate Buchanan Room on the HSU campus.

The annual professional development event will feature a keynote speaker and breakout sessions exploring effective pedagogy, inclusive communities and inclusive student success.

The keynote workshop is titled “Why Don’t My Students Think I’m Groovy? The New “Rs” for Engaging Millennial Learners.” The presenter will be Christy Price, a faculty member at Dalton State University and recipient of the Carnegie Foundation’s 2010 Outstanding Professor Award.

Breakout sessions include:

  • Creating “I Don’t Want to Miss a Moment of This!” Learning Environments (with an HSU student panel)
  • Stereotype Threat and My Students: What Can I Do About It?
  • Engaged Reading: Getting Students to Read Effectively for Class
  • New Initiatives for Student Success @ HSU
  • Team-Based Learning: Strategies, Techniques, and Networking

There will also be a learning and teaching poster showcase, and raffle drawings for an iPad Mini and Kindle Fire. Breakfast and lunch are included.
