International Education Week Celebrates Sixth Year

Humboldt State kicks off International Education Week this Tuesday, Nov. 13, with Yan Huang, Visiting Professor, Dept. of World Languages and Cultures presenting “Chinese Characters and Their Stories” at 9:30 a.m. in the Goodwin Forum.

Now in its sixth year, the week of workshops, presentations and, yes, an international fashion show, has grown from humble beginnings to a community-wide three-day event.

Keynote addresses will be given by author Peter Bunyard, who will be discussing climate change and deforestation in the Amazon Basin and Dr. Weichi Zhou, from the Institute for World Religions, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, in Beijing, China.

The events also includes information on study abroad for students and a Passport Day with the United States Post Office coming to campus to help students, faculty and staff obtain their passports. Passports are required for all international travel.

International Education Week, however, goes beyond simply getting your passport, Director of International Programs Dr. Guy-Alain Amoussou stresses.

“It’s bigger than just study abroad, it’s an awareness of what ‘international’ is,” says Dr. Amoussou.

“It’s a way to make students, faculty, staff, and the larger community, aware of the ways faculty is involved in the international community,” adds Dr. Michael Eldridge, English Professor and Program Director of World Languages and Cultures.

All of the events for International Education Week are free and the community is encouraged to participate. For more information, including a complete schedule of events, visit http://www.humboldt.edu/iew/.
