Jacks 31st in Football Gazette's Top 40

This Week’s Game: Following a big win over Western Oregon on Saturday, the Lumberjacks have cracked into one organization’s NCAA Division II rankings to start the week. The Football Gazette, a publication covering football since 1986, lists the Jacks No. 31 in this week’s top 40. The poll puts them ahead of 2006 opponents Central Washington (33rd) and Western Oregon (35th). Now the Jacks put their status to another test when they take back-to-back road trips for the first time this season. Humboldt State heads to Southern California for Saturday’s game against Azusa Pacific. Kick-off in Azusa is scheduled for 6 p.m.

On the Air: As a former Humboldt State football standout and broadcast journalism graduate, J.B. Mathers brings both his fine-tuned on-air skills and knowledge of the game to all Lumberjack radio broadcasts. He’ll handle the play-by-play duties again throughout the fall, with each game aired on Bicoastal Media’s ESPN Radio affiliate, KATA, located at 1340 on the AM dial. All games are also simulcast on the Internet, and can be accessed through a link on the main page of the hsujacks.com web site. Broadcasts begin 15 minutes prior to scheduled game time with the pre-game show, featuring interviews and analysis.

Lumberjacks Notes: Saturday’s win over Western Oregon was notable for several reasons, including the fact that the Wolves were nationally ranked in at least one poll prior to the meeting, and were also previously unbeaten. The victory also gave the Lumberjacks their best start since 1994, when they were also 4-1 to begin a campaign that ended with a 8-2 record. They started that year with four wins before suffering consecutive defeats, then closing it out strong. …Strong safety Kyle Killingsworth continues to impact the Jacks’ success, putting together perhaps his best overall game this year on Saturday. Along with making several big tackles, Killingsworth had a 93-yard punt return for touchdown and also returned an interception 74 yards to set up the game-clinching touchdown. Killingsworth raises his season average to 22.8 yards per punt return to rank second in the nation in that category. …Also improving their national status among NCAA Division II athletes last week were HSU quarterback Blake Moorman, who is listed No. 7 in total offense with an average of 276.4 yards per game, and wide receiver Joey Stein, who is 18th overall with an average of 87.6 yards per game. Defensively, Josh Costa is listed No. 6 in the nation in tackles with an average of 11 per game. Costa, a senior linebacker, has been the unsung hero of the HSU defense, stepping up to make a team-high 17 tackles, two for lost yards, and one sack in the win over WOU last week. …Despite Saturday’s victory, HSU head coach Doug Adkins sees no reason for the Jacks to rest on their laurels. Areas of concern he and his assistants plan to address in practice include tackling technique, red zone offense and, once again, the running game. “When you look at the split of passing plays to running plays, you see that we had 27 of each Saturday,” Adkins said. “But our 27 running plays only produced 58 yards of our 295 yards of offense, and that needs to improve.”
