William McCallum, head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona and one of the standards’ lead writers, will speak in Founders Hall, Room 118. His address, “Coming Together to Help Children Learn Mathematics: The Common Core State Standards,” is part of HSU’s ongoing Kieval Lecture Series, sponsored by the Department of Mathematics.

More than 85 percent of the U.S. population resides in states that have adopted the common core state standards. They are designed to impart focus and coherence nationwide to math education. McCallum’s evening lecture will examine what parents, educators and mathematicians can do to realize the standards’ potential.

Parents, teachers and school administrators are encouraged to attend the Mar. 20 lecture.

McCallum earned a doctorate in mathematics from Harvard in 1984 and moved to the University of Arizona in 1987. He co-authored the common core state standards in 2009-2010.

In addition to the March 20 Kieval Lecture, McCallum will host a math colloquium the same day at 4 p.m. in room 258 of the Wildlife and Forestry building. He will discuss “From Triangles to Elliptic Curves.” This also is open to all.

Humboldt State’s Kieval Lecture Series brings eminent mathematicians to campus annually to speak about broad aspects of the discipline that are of interest to undergraduates and the general public. The series was endowed by Harry S. Kieval, HSU professor of mathematics from 1966 to 1979.
