MSW Degree Gains Full Accreditation

Arcata – Capping four years of effort, Humboldt State University’s Department of Social Work has won full accreditation of its Master’s of Social Work (MSW) degree from the Council on Social Work Education, the accrediting agency for such graduate programs nationwide.

In recognition of the council’s approval, the Department of Social Work will host a reception on Friday, Nov. 30, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at United Indian Health Services, 1600 Weeot Way, Arcata, to honor both campus and community contributions to the MSW initiative. Some 200 guests are expected.

Ken K. Nakamura, department chair, said the MSW program not only received full accreditation, but also no further requests to modify courses or standards, a comprehensive approval accorded to less than 1% of accredited programs nationally.

He added: “This [MSW initiative] has been an extensive effort on the part of the students, staff, faculty and community and is a wonderful achievement for HSU’s academics.”

The degree is awarded by Humboldt State’s College of Professional Studies.
