Mu Alpha Theta Contest Winners Prove Mathematical Mettle

This spring the Mu Alpha Theta (Mathematics) Contest continued with its format that included a section of shorter problems along with a section of more challenging problems.

Students worked on the examination for three hours on a Saturday morning, April 18th. As in the past there are two categories distinguishing more advanced (B category) mathematics students who have completed more than one upper division mathematics course from beginning (A Category) mathematics students who have not completed more than one upper division mathematics course.

The contest was organized and judged this year by Professors Jeff Haag and Martin Flashman of the HSU Mathematics Department.

In the A category (for beginning math students) the first prize of $100 was won by James Nicovich, the second place prize of $50 was won by Jason McClelland, while the third prize of $25 awarded to Linlin Xing.

First prize of $100 in the B category (for advanced math students) was won by Michael Campbell, the second prize of $50 was won by Hans Parshall and third place prize of $25 was awarded to Michael Stobb.
