Subkis comes to KHSU with many years of experience in public radio. For the last 18 years, he has served as General Manager of WCQS, a public radio station in Asheville, North Carolina. His accomplishments there included stabilizing the station’s finances, and planning and leading two capital campaigns.

Prior to WCQS, Subkis was General Manager for six years at WSFP, a public radio station at the University of South Florida in Fort Myers. He also has many years experience in programming and other areas at four other public radio stations. He holds a master’s degree in Radio and Television from Ohio University and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology/Psychology from James Madison University, and he has taught at various universities.

In announcing the appointment in a letter to the KHSU community, HSU President Rollin Richmond expressed confidence that Subkis would provide the leadership the station needs.

“I am convinced that Ed Subkis will help us meet the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead, and I look forward to joining you in welcoming him and in supporting his leadership of KHSU,” Richmond wrote.

Richmond said that two important priorities for the station will be managing costs and increasing support.

Richmond also took the opportunity to thank KHSU members, underwriters, volunteers and staff for their work in what he called a “turnaround” at the station. In addition, he credited HSU Vice President for Advancement Robert Gunsalus, who has oversight responsibilities for the station, and Patrick Cleary, who served as interim General Manager for over a year and chaired the search committee.

“Thanks to the hard work and generosity of many people, KHSU is now positioned to excel,” Richmond wrote.

KHSU, a public service of Humboldt State University, is the most-listened to station on the North Coast. More information about the station, as well as the full text of the letter about Subkis’ appointment, is at www.khsu.org.
