New Parking Permit Dispensers Coming to Campus

Five new parking permit dispensers have been installed in several parking lots across Humboldt State University’s campus as of Tuesday, Jan. 18, the first day of the spring semester. In addition to increasing the number of dispensers from four to five on campus, the new units accept debit and credit cards and coins.

The new dispensers dispense a daily permit for $3.50 that is valid for that day in any “G” parking lot or in the “Permit Required” curb line parking areas of 17th Street and B Street. The new permits are also be valid in any “FS” parking areas after 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday.

Permits are not required from 5:00 p.m. Friday to 7:00 a.m. Monday.

The new dispensers are located in the following lots:

  • G1 (near Jolly Giant Commons)
  • G11 (N. Mai Kai, near the parking booth)
  • G15 (14th & Union)
  • G13 (17th & Union)
  • FS6 (Library, after 5 p.m.)

“We want to emphasize that these new dispensers are designed for ‘Park, Pay and Display.’ That is, we want campus visitors to park their cars, walk to one of the nearby permit dispensers, buy the permit, and then display it on their dashboard. This will ensure visitors have a parking spot before they purchase a permit,” says University Police Chief Tom Dewey.

The new dispensers are state-of-the art models from Cale Parking Systems USA, an industry leader for over 50 years with over 50,000 parking machines installed in over 35 countries worldwide. HSU has chosen the same type of dispensers that have been proving their effectiveness in Portland, Ore., Colorado State University and around the San Francisco bay area. The new dispensers have a host of advantages for users, including:

  • New dispensers accept debit and credit cards, in addition to coins.
  • New dispenser locations are designed to enhance pedestrian safety.
  • More dispenser locations give customers more options.
  • The new dispensers draw their power from onboard solar panels.
  • The new dispensers are “Park, Pay & Display,” meaning campus visitors can secure a parking spot before purchasing a permit.
  • The new dispensers are much more reliable than existing, outdated machines.

The Parking Information Booth, located in the G11 parking lot, will be open for daily permit sales and customer service throughout the semester, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Funding for the new dispensers comes from parking revenue generated from permit sales and parking meters.
