Kung fills a vacancy left by C.C. Yin who resigned from the Board of Trustees in December 2010.
A resident of Los Altos, Kung, 65, has served as a managing partner of Acorn Campus Ventures since 2006. In 2000, he co-founded Pine Photonics Communication, and later founded Opnext where he served until 2005. Kung was chief executive officer and founder of Luxnet Corporation from 1998 to 2000 and senior vice president of business development for American Xtal Technology from 1996 to 1998. He served as co-founder and vice president of manufacturing for SDL from 1983 to 1995 and was project manager in the Optoelectronics Division of Hewlett Packard from 1974 to 1983.
Kung earned a bachelor of science degree from National Cheng Kung University, a master of science degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a doctoral degree from the University of California, Berkeley, all in electrical engineering. He also received a master’s degree in business administration from Santa Clara University. The appointment requires Senate confirmation.
More than 200 CSU Research Projects to be Presented
Genes, proteins and cancers are among the wide-ranging science-related topics that will be explored at the 23rd Annual CSU Biotechnology Symposium Jan. 7 and 8 at the Hyatt Regency in Orange County.
The symposium is sponsored by the CSU Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB), which coordinates and supports biotechnology efforts throughout the CSU and serves as the CSU’s primary liaison to industry and academic partners.
With roughly 500 CSU students and faculty joining nearly 100 industry professionals, community college representatives and elected officials, the symposium is dedicated to developing emerging and future biotechnology researchers in California. The symposium will also feature expert panels of scientists, engineers and journalists addressing healthcare solutions for the developing world, public understanding of human DNA analysis and the process of turning life-science innovations into products. CSU Launches New Science Blog
The CSU recently launched Science and the CSU, a new blog that will feature science-related stories and developments across the 23-campus system. Providing news, features, updates and insights, “Science and the CSU” will also spotlight activities, events, resources, research and discoveries at the CSU.
The blog was developed to promote the CSU’s significant impact in addressing California’s key issues in health, the environment, energy, telecommunications and climate. CSU graduates contribute significantly to research, education and workforce development in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and the CSU is California’s largest producer of K-12 science and mathematics teachers.
