HSU Gets Access to 15,000 National News Videos, Documents, and Images

Humboldt State students, faculty, and staff now have access to 15,000 national news, videos, documents, and images through NBC Learn Higher Ed, an online resource that enhances teaching and supports research.

The collection, which is accessible to anyone with an HSU username and password, includes historic primary-source newscasts, original video series, and the latest current event videos from NBC News.

“What NBC Higher Ed provides is content that is timely and updated daily,” says Library Media Coordinator Kumi Watanabe-Schock. “Students can search for videos to supplement their research and faculty can pick current news clips to use in class.”

The catalogue is clearly organized and makes it simple for users to find resources related to specific topics like Environmental Sciences, Hispanic Heritage and Constitutional Law. It’s accessible from any mobile device or computer.

Features include a playlist to arrange information and research and a “CueCard” media player that makes downloading, saving, sharing and citing videos easy. Closed-captioning and full transcripts are also available.

“The other nice thing is it integrates easily with Moodle, which makes it a really convenient resource in the classroom,” Watanabe-Schock says.

The California State University system has purchased NBC Learn Higher Ed for each of its 23 campuses through June 30, 2017. To access the resource, visit highered.nbclearn.com/portal/site/HigherEd. In addition to NBC Learn Higher Ed, the HSU Library’s video collection includes more than 9,000 titles, from documentaries to feature films, that can be checked out or streamed online. Campus lectures are also available through Humboldt Digital Scholar, an online repository for university research and scholarship.
