Rhea Williamson, Dean of Humboldt State’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, has announced the appointment of Steve Karp to be the Director of the Sponsored Programs Foundation with immediate effect.
Karp had been serving as interim director since January, 2011. The Sponsored Programs Foundation is an HSU auxiliary. It promotes and administers academic research, providing professional support to faculty and other applicants with pre- and post-grant award services.
“I look forward to building a strong and customer service-focused organization that enables Humboldt State to increase the number of grant proposals to a wide range of research, scholarly and creative opportunities,” Karp said. “We will be developing operations and practices that enhance data tracking and management of awards. The foundation also will expand HSU’s outreach to other stakeholders, including other CSU campuses and institutions of higher learning and community and industry partners.”
Karp brings both management and financial experience to the directorship. From 2005-2010, he was the Associate Director of the Northern California Small Business Development Center at HSU. He managed the financials for 10 centers.
Previously, Karp worked in finance for several high technology companies, including Apple, Synopsys and Viacom, where he assisted in large software system conversions. He was also vice president of finance for a 75-person start-up that raised $40 million from venture capitalists.
Karp earned his B.S. in Economics from California Polytechnic State University in 1981 and his M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California in 1983. His early experience included service with the Santa Barbara Research Center and Sonatech, government subcontracting companies.
