KRFH Earns Top College Radio Station Award

Humboldt State’s student-run radio station, KRFH, has been selected as 2014 College Radio Station of the Year by RadioFlag, an organization that connects and promotes content produced by college broadcasters throughout the world.

KRFH has been honored by RadioFlag as the 2014 College Radio Station of the Year.

Selected from a listing of college-affiliated stations representing campuses of all sizes and resources, KRFH was recognized for the second time since RadioFlag launched in 2011. HSU also earned top honor in 2012.

“We beat out stations in much larger markets with much larger budgets,” said Cliff Berkowitz, KRFH faculty advisor. “RadioFlag has recognized the unbridled passion our students demonstrate for this broadcasting medium that is rarely shown, even in professional media these days.”

KRFH’s mix of local news and innovative programming led to its selection, Berkowitz said. Shows like “Talx,” a weekly public affairs talk show, and “Local MIxx,” a live program featuring club DJs that also teaches students the art of club mixing, caught the attention of the judging panel, Berkowitz said.

The HSU station celebrated another milestone in spring, 2014, when it was granted a low-power FM license by the FCC that provides listeners both online and on-air access to programming. In fall, 2013, KRFH added live play-by-play of selected HSU sporting events to its repertoire.

Listeners can tune in to KRFH at 105.1 FM or online at RadioFlag’s mobile app that allows free access to programming streamed by college stations worldwide can be downloaded at
