School of Business’s Symposium Looks to Boost Socially-Minded Entrepreneurs

Humboldt State University’s Institute for Entrepreneurship Education, part of the School of Business, is hosting a first-of-its-kind symposium titled “Changing the World One Entrepreneur at a Time.” The event takes place in the Great Hall, part of the new College Creek Apartments, located above the College Creek Marketplace, on Friday, April 8, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required, but an RSVP is requested.

Maureen Sedonaen, CEO of the Youth Leadership Institute, will deliver the symposium’s keynote address. Sedonaen is the founder-president and CEO of Youth Leadership Institute and is a nationally and internationally recognized authority and thought leader in the fields of substance abuse prevention, strategic youth leadership and youth development. Her work focuses primarily on the intersections between change strategies, community engagement and researched evidence in the areas of alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention, evaluation, public policy, philanthropy and civic engagement.

Other speakers slated for the event are Eureka-based philanthropist Betty Chinn; executive director of the youth outreach organization P:EAR, Beth Burns; and executive director of the international non-profit Girls Helping Girls, Sejal Hathi. School of Business Professor Nancy Vizenor, the event’s coordinator, will deliver the opening remarks.

The afternoon schedule includes workshops to aid entrepreneurs in identifying nonprofit resources, grant writing, business plan writing and helping businesses develop a balanced scorecard with regard to social responsibility and profitability.

A series of events leading up to the symposium are slated for March 29 and April 5. These events are designed to introduce students to the socially beneficial aspects of entrepreneurship. The events, listed in order, are:
