Student Health Unit Reaccredited

Arcata - Humboldt State University’s Student Health and Counseling Center, which is putting the finishing touches to a $500,000 modernization, has received a fresh stamp of approval from the national organization that monitors the facility’s medical services.

The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC/Accreditation Association) notified Student Health Center Director Rebecca Stauffer that her unit remains among more than 3,000-plus such facilities nationwide that are examined periodically by the AAAHC for reaccreditation.

“This approval underscores our long-standing commitment to providing the highest possible levels of care to our student community,” Dr. Stauffer said. “Our 23 staff members are proud to be recognized for their outstanding care of our young people.”

Reaccreditation involves an extensive on-site, peer-based survey of both services and facilities. HSU’s center offers basic medical services at no charge and elective services at exceptionally low cost. Resources include primary and acute medical care, x-ray capability, a laboratory and a pharmacy and health education. “Our medical professionals are dedicated to meeting the health needs of the student community, promoting wellness and independence and collaborating with local and regional counterparts to provide access to comprehensive services,” Dr. Stauffer said.

The half-million dollar upgrade includes installation of state-of-the-art medical cabinetry, health education display cases, new furniture and carpets, fresh signage and a refurbished entrance and lobby.

In response to student requests, the center recently adopted a new scheduling system for walk-ins, to cut wait times. “Everyday, one M.D. is assigned as the acute care doctor in the Gold Clinic and sees patients who are seriously ill or injured and need immediate care,” Dr. Stauffer said. “We don’t burden this physician with routine visits, and thereby preserve walk-in services for acute cases.”

The new system is a convenience to students needing routine treatment as well. Scheduled for appointments later in the day, they are seen promptly and spared long waits. The new arrangement is based on research of other student health centers and medical clinics in general. Jasmine Manuel, President of the campus Pre-Med Club, says “Same-day appointments are great, especially for student schedules. We are really busy and same-days are very convenient.” There is a suggestion box in the front lobby and student comments are welcome about the new walk-in system or the modernization. “The new look is awesome; it feels homey and warm,” Manuel said.
