California Middle Class Scholarship to Support HSU Students

Humboldt State University’s Financial Aid Office urges current and future students to apply right away for California’s new Middle Class Scholarship, an additional support program for undergraduates that starts Fall Semester 2014.

The application deadline is Mar. 2.

On a graduating annual basis, the new Middle Class Scholarship will enable current and future students to save 10-40 percent on their CSU tuition and fees, depending on family income. Annual tuition is currently $5472, plus campus fees.

A family earning up to $100,000 a year can receive a maximum 14 percent scholarship in 2014-2015, up to 20 percent in 2015-2016 and up to 30 percent in academic year 2016-2017. Finally, the new scholarship funding will peak at up to 40 percent in 2017-2018.

Students whose families earn between $100,001 and $150,000 a year may be eligible for a scholarship of at least 10 percent of tuition.

HSU Financial Aid chief Peggy Metzger explains that the Middle Class Scholarship is not a set amount. It may vary by student and institution.

She adds, “The amount is determined after the award of any federal Pell Grant, Cal Grant and institutional needs-based grants for which a given student is eligible. Also, the final award amount will hinge on the number of students eligible statewide and on the funding allocated by the state budget.”

Eligible students must be a California resident attending a CSU or UC and be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or have AB540 (non-resident) status.

To apply for the Middle Class Scholarship, simply file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov by March 2, 2014. AB540 students are also eligible to apply for the Middle Class Scholarship by filing under the California Dream Act (http://www.csac.ca.gov/dream_act.asp) by March 2.
