Biology Student Wins Research Award

James Kealey, a student from HSU's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, recently won a "best talk" award (and a $50.00 check) at the West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference (WCBSURC) at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Although currently a Berkeley undergraduate, he gained his research experience at HSU, working with Dr. Sean Craig on the effects of species richness, species composition and available substrate on recruitment of marine invertebrates in Humboldt Bay.

p>Mr. Kealey plans to pursue graduate studies and expresses a "great deal of gratitude" for what he learned from the eight faculty and 11 other students in the REU program last summer at Humboldt State. The program has resulted in three awards at the same research conference the past two years. Each and every REU student from HSU has won an award at the meeting, eclipsing students from Berkeley and institutions nationwide.

"We're proud of what we've been able to accomplish" says Dr. Craig, and HSU faculty "have done a superb job collaborating with with these students, many of whom have already gone on to prestigious graduate programs."
