Conference Highlights Student Research

Humboldt State hosts its two-day North Coast Student Research Conference and Graduate Fair on Friday and Saturday, March 27-28, with a reception scheduled for Thursday in the University Banquet Room.

The event is a chance for students and community members to learn about student-led research projects at HSU, meet with campus professionals and take tours of laboratories and research facilities across campus.

The Graduate Fair, scheduled for Friday, takes place on the U.C. Quad and will feature representatives from Humboldt’s graduate programs. HSU offers graduate degrees in biology, business, education, English, environment and community, environmental systems, kinesiology, natural resources, psychology, social work, sociology and theatre arts.

On Friday, Professor Morgan Varner, who was recently featured in the spring issue of Humboldt magazine, will showcase the Forestry Department’s state-of-the-art fire lab. One of only three in the nation, the lab’s heat thermal imaging camera and fire table allow foresters and fire fighters to closely study how fuels behave.

Attendees can tour the new Kinesiology and Athletics laboratories, including the recently expanded Human Performance and Biomechanics laboratories, and labs throughout the College of Natural Resources and Sciences.

Also on Saturday, students will present more than 40 research projects ranging from population densities of black-tailed prairie dogs to investigations into the effects of electronic communication on student writing.

The conference’s special sessions highlight resume writing skills, financial aid for graduate students and workshops on thesis writing. The event wraps up with an awards ceremony and a no-host social hour at Humboldt Brews.
