Fire Quickly Contained in Music Building

Arcata — At about 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 29, Humboldt State University faculty members noticed smoke coming from a locked custodial closet in Old Music Building 8A, a single story structure. Faculty members pulled the fire alarm and evacuated the building. There were no injuries and the University Police Department determined that there was no broad threat to the campus as a whole.

University police and Arcata fire personnel responded to the scene. A fire crew entered the building, and was able to contain and extinguish the fire in a short time. The extent of the damage is undetermined and an investigation is in progress. The structure is intact, but smoke did fill the building and there was some damage from water used by the fire crew. Assistance was provided by Arcata Police and Arcata Civilian Volunteer Patrol Personnel

Neighboring Siemens Hall was evacuated briefly when prevailing winds pushed smoke into the building.

The old Music Building will be closed for the remainder of the day and probably for some time thereafter. University officials are working to reschedule classes that may be affected.

Regular updates on class relocations will be available shortly on the HSU homepage.
