Geography Students Win at Conference

A group of 27 Humboldt State geography students, and department faculty Joe Leeper, Stephen Cunha, Dennis Fitzsimons, and Chris Haynes, traveled to Shasta College in Redding, Calif. for the California Geographic Society Annual Conference from April 28 to 30.

Seven students competed in the event's competitions, bringing home awards for first- and second-place posters; second place in the mapping competition; first place in the animated mapping competition; second place in the Tom McKnight undergraduate paper competition; and the Geosystems Award for the top graduate or undergraduate physical environment paper, awarded to Kevin McManigal.

Twelve other universities participated in the competitions, including USC, UCLA, CSU Chico, Sonoma State, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, and San Diego State.

Joe Leeper also presented HSU geography alumni Jill Montgomery with the award for outstanding K-12 teaching for her work at Sequoia Elementary School in Redding.
