HSU Attracts Heavy Bookings for Frosh Orientation

Humboldt State University expects a full complement of incoming students at each of its summer orientation sessions for the 2010/2011 academic year.

Current figures show 425 students registered for the June orientation, 425 for the July session and 530 for August.

The Humboldt Orientation Program (HOP), which provides students and families with key information about course offerings, class registration and campus resources, is scheduled June 24-25, July 8-9 and August 18-20. Fall classes start Monday, August 23.

Students, parents and families meet with academic deans, faculty, administrators and current students to get acquainted with the Arcata campus, founded in 1913. The HOP provides practical information about curriculum, registration, housing, financial aid, sports, clubs and extracurricular activities.

Families and friends have a crucial role in collegiate success and HSU offers a parent and family program that runs concurrently with each HOP session. The June and July orientations offer parents and families the option of staying in the residence halls, but August does not because students are moving into them that week for the fall semester.

The HSU Bookstore will host a Family and Guest Lounge during the June and July orientations equipped with Internet and email access, newspapers, magazines, games and refreshments. All parents and families are invited to join the Parents and Family Network, enabling them to communicate at will with other HSU parents and receive periodic campus news and updates about events and activities. The social network site can be reached for easy sign-up at www.hsufamilynetwork.org. Parents communicate by county and region, sharing advice about hotel accommodations and transportation routes to the Redwood Coast, campus parking and class sections, personal finances, off-campus housing, student privacy protections, mutual HSU experiences and scores of related issues.

For many students and their families, HOP marks a first-time visit to the Redwood Coast and often they opt for an extended stay through the weekend. Many will become acquainted not only with Arcata, but also with Eureka, Crescent City, Ferndale and Fortuna.

Visitors can arrange HOP child care at the Children’s Center, on a space available basis, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. for youngsters 1-8. The fee is $10 per child and reservations are available at 707/826-3838.
