HSU Natural History Museum Hosts Arts! Arcata Event

The HSU Natural History Museum invites community members to visit for an evening of art, music, and natural history exploration for Arts! Arcata on Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening will celebrate the work of two local artists inspired by nature, the acoustic music of For Folk’s Sake, and the museum’s new hands-on Redwood Ecology exhibit.

Landscape watercolor artist Lauren Lester’s colorful paintings convey her love of the Northern California’s wild places. She describes her process of painting landscapes as “…what connects me to our natural world. It is my gift back to my favorite places.” Come meet the artist to learn more about the incredible mountains, rivers, and forests featured in her paintings.

The Redwood Ecology exhibit was built in part with the assistance of staff at the Institute for Redwood Ecology on the HSU Campus. These scientists, Dendrochronologists, use tree cores taken from the tops to the bottoms of trees to solve ecological mysteries, such as how the climate has changed over time in a particular location. They also use this information to estimate the age of redwood trees. The exhibit provides the opportunity to work with the same tools as a Dendrochronologist to solve a redwood mystery.

A key component of the Redwood Ecology exhibit is a seven-foot long puzzle by Trinidad artist Paula Levine, which entices kids of all ages to uncover the secrets of the redwood forest. Levine’s signature wooden puzzles are a well-loved local favorite. She will be showing a wide selection of her handcrafted puzzles for the Arts! Arcata event.

The HSU Natural History Museum is located at 1315 G St., Arcata. Admission for Arts! Arcata is free. For more information please call (707) 826-4479 or visit humboldt.edu/natmus.
