Math Modeling Contestants Earn Merits

Two teams of HSU engineering students took on the challenges of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, set forth by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) last February. It was just recently announced that HSU's competing teams earned “Meritous” rankings based on their problem solutions.

The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) challenges student teams to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to one of three open-ended problems over the course of only four days. This year's problems included optimal positioning and movement for a spray irrigation system and positioning for wheelchair-assistance stations at a large, multi-terminal airport.

The contest attracts diverse students and faculty advisors from over 500 institutions around the world, including Harvard, Duke, and MIT.

HSU's teams ranked in the top 18 percent of the 748 entries. Of the 247 U.S. and 501 foreign teams, only 12 received a higher rating.

The HSU student participants were Adam Siade, Michael Moore, Kristine Baker, Erin McDonald, Auriah Milanes, and Jennifer Beard.
