Photo Op of Earthquake Simulator

Reporters and photographers are invited to a private presentation of the mobile earthquake simulator at the Humboldt County Fair on Friday, August 8, at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the exhibit opens to the public.

Professor Lori Dengler, chair of Humboldt State’s Department of Geology, has invited the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors to attend the Friday morning photo op. The simulator is nicknamed “Big Shaker” and is reputed to be the largest mobile facility of its kind in the world. It can duplicate a variety of seismic events with a magnitude as high as 8.5. The vehicle is a truck trailer housing a mock-up living room that can accommodate nine people at a time. A customized hydraulic system generates the “quakes.” Dr. Dengler organized the simulator’s presentation at the fair with the financial support of AMEC Geomatrix, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, Humboldt Area Foundation, Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, Humboldt State University, LACO Associates, Pacific Watershed Associates, SHN Consulting Engineers and Geologists, Inc., Trinidad Rancheria, William Lettis and Associates, Inc., and Winzler & Kelly
