Police Step Up Bike/Skateboard Safety Enforcement for School Reopening

The Humboldt State University and Arcata Police Departments and the California Highway Patrol will be conducting a bicycle and skateboard safety, education and enforcement campaign as the approaching fall semester begins at area schools.

To reinforce both HSU campus and municipal safety, police officers will step up enforcement against violations not only by bicyclists and skateboarders, but also by pedestrians and motorists.

Educational brochures, with current state laws and the University Code of Rules and Regulations for campus jurisdiction, have been updated and will be readily available to the public. Officers will help ensure citizen safety through outreach, education and enforcement. The initiative is aimed at a steady reduction of accidents and injuries.

University, Arcata and Highway Patrol authorities urge the use of alternative modes of transportation and courteous sharing of roadways by motorists, bicyclists, skateboarders and pedestrians.

Under state law, bicycles are considered vehicles and cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists.

Further information about the special enforcement and education program is posted at humboldt.edu/police and cityofarcata.org/departments/police.

Updated educational pamphlets are available at police agencies.
