Printmaking Students Present Steamroller Woodcut Printing

Inspired by the artistic potential of plywood, ink, and a steamroller, the HSU Printmakers will give Humboldt an exciting day of steamroller printing. On April 21st from 9am to 9pm at the HSU Main campus, a team of student artists will be creating several woodcut prints, led by HSU Professor Sarah Whorf. The public will have the opportunity to witness large-scale printmaking.

What is steamroller printing exactly? Imagine a hand pressing down on a rubber stamp, then, replace “rubber stamp” with “plywood” and “hand” with steamroller.” Mix in a dedicated group of artists and printmakers with months of preparation, and voila…the perfect combination for an all-day printing extravaganza. Workshop printers will produce prints made with more than three tons of steamrolling pressure.

A core group of HSU printmakers, joined by ceramic and sculpture students, are responsible for creating each of the nine woodblocks to be printed. Participating students include:  Faith Dickens, Kristy Eden, Jorden Goodspeed, Robert Gribbin, Amanda Hubacek, Heather Johnston, Samuel Kirby, Jennifer McElroy, Ruth Miller, Kristina Pedersen, Charissa Schulze and Justin Skillstad. Starting in January, each block was chosen, designed, and carved by a different artist or collaborative artist team. The designs include a variety of individualized themes and imagery ranging from animal forms and cityscapes to abstracted q-tips and minimalist pattern.
