Riding the Green Wave

It’s summer time and the surf is calling. Most surfers will be driving up and down the beach looking for that perfect set. This summer two surfers are ditching their car and doing it right.

Department of Communication professor Scott Paynton and HSU alum Michael Conway are hitting the road looking for good surf without the car. These surfers are taking their bikes to tour the coast for the ultimate two-week 550 mile surfing adventure.

Realizing that this outdoor activity can be fairly polluting as surfers buy petroleum based gear and cruise the beaches looking for waves, Scott and Michael decided to hang ten the clean way. Towing their boards behind them and sporting the latest eco-friendly gear, these surfers will demonstrate how fun environmental responsibility can be.

Their boards are made of a new Biofoam technology that uses all-natural plant oils, have bamboo cloth covers, and recycled plastic cords. Their wetsuits are a neoprene limestone material instead of petroleum based rubber. Even their surf wax is made from plant oils.

The duo is hoping to increase environmental awareness in everyone they meet along the way, not just the surfers. “This project is the beginning of reaching more people about even more pressing issues, and teaching that there are alternatives to everything, including surfboards and bike equipment,” said Michael.

If all this wasn’t enough, they will also be participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life Event in July. While raising environmental awareness through example and fundraising, Scott and Mike are in for one wild ride.
