Humboldt State students can donate a portion of their meal points between now and April 27 as part of a regional food drive organized by the HSU Service Learning Center.

Loretta Vallot, a Service Learning Intern and a student organizer of the food drive, said, “This is one of the simplest ways for students to get involved and promote change. Don’t let your points go to waste!”

Donated meal points will be used to purchase food from the school’s vendor, and these relief food supplies will be delivered directly to Food for People, the Eureka food bank.

This on-campus effort is part of a broader campaign against hunger. The Service Learning Center’s efforts are part of a nationwide movement, spurred by the National Feinstein Foundation, to alleviate hunger across the country. The more food and money that an agency collects regionally, the more money it receives nationally from the Feinstein Challenge.

Partnering organizations in the community include the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Cascade, Boy Scouts of America—Redwood Empire Council, and The Ink People—Coffee Opp.

Partners on campus include Youth Educational Services (Y.E.S.), the Residence Hall Association, Ron Rudebock and the entire Dining Services Staff, and the Sustainable Living Arts and Music (SLAM) Festival planning committee.

To donate meal points, students should visit http://studentaffairs.humboldt.edu/slee/ to download a donation form.

Once completed, students should return it to the Service Learning Center, Nelson Hall West 139, until April 27. Student organizers of the food drive will also be tabling in the “J” between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., through April 27.

Students without points are able to donate canned food at the Service Learning Center, or they can bring canned goods to the SLAM Fest on April 21.
