HSU to Host Coalition for American Indians in Computing Program

Reporters, photographers and videographers are invited to the 60-minute opening ceremony Tuesday, July 13, of the Coalition for American Indians in Computing (CAIC) program at 1:30 p.m. in the Forum adjoining Humboldt State's Behavioral and Social Sciences Building.

The fourth and final annual CAIC summer program at HSU, running through July 23, will host 15 Native American high school students. The program centers on the use of technology to support the preservation of language and culture. Most of the students are from local tribes and all 15 eclipsed more than 60 competitors nationwide.

Background:

A 2006 survey of northern California tribes found their communities experience severe difficulty filling job positions that require intermediate to advanced computer skills. They include computer science, computing information science and information technology training. Humboldt State's CAIC (funded by the National Science Foundation) is designed to bridge the gap and provide career opportunities in high technology fields for American Indian youth.

Press RSVP is requested. Dial Janet Sclar, Humboldt State CAIC Project Coordinator, at 707-826-3338.
