The California State University has reached a tentative agreement on a successor contract with the California Faculty Association (CFA). The contract runs through June 30, 2014 and becomes effective upon ratification by CFA members and the CSU Board of Trustees.
The tentative agreement calls for no salary increases for 2010-11 and 2011-12 with opportunities to re-open salary and benefits for 2012-13 and 2013-14. In addition, the agreement calls for changes to the evaluation and appointments process for three-year temporary faculty appointments, as well as an increased reimbursement rate to the CSU for leave time taken for union duties.
Other provisions include a discretionary campus-based equity program that targets specific faculty classifications and a systemwide online evaluation process.
“In this extremely challenging budget climate, we are pleased to come to an agreement with the CFA that will allow both parties to move forward and focus on the state’s reinvestment in higher education,” said John Swarbrick, CSU associate vice chancellor for Labor Relations.
The CFA represents 23,000 faculty, coaches, counselors and librarians. Both parties are hoping to complete the ratification process at the September 18-19 CSU Board of Trustees meeting.
Cal State Online Board Selects Partner
The California State University has selected Pearson eCollege to provide online course and program delivery services for Cal State Online.
Cal State Online will provide a comprehensive set of online program offerings developed by faculty from the 23 campuses combined with student support and a variety of innovative learning technologies. Through its partnership with Pearson eCollege, Cal State Online will use online learning technology, services and support including a cloud-based learning management system and data analytics to: support and monitor student performance and learning outcomes; assist and support course development for participating programs; and handle outreach, marketing and enrollment services. Three New Trustees Appointed to Board
Gov. Jerry Brown has appointed Lupe Garcia, Hugo Morales and James “Larry” Norton to the CSU Board of Trustees.
Garcia has served in multiple positions at Gap Inc. since 1999, including associate general counsel, senior corporate counsel and corporate counsel. She is a member of the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Morales has been executive director at Radio Bilingüe Inc. since 1980, served as an adjunct lecturer of the La Raza Studies Program at CSU Fresno from 1976 to 1979, and received the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1994 and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in 1999. In 2011, he received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the CSU Board of Trustees and CSU Sacramento.
Norton was principal at Norton and Associates from 1980 to 2007, served as vice president at the Institute for Medical Sciences at the California Pacific Medical Center from 1976 to 1980, and was director of development and community relations at Dominican University from 1970 to 1976. He earned an MA degree in history from San José State.
CSU Medals Early in the Olympics
The 18 CSU students and alumni participating in the London 2012 Summer Olympics are proving victorious early in the games. Cal Poly Pomona alumna Kim Rhode made Olympic history as the first American to win gold in five consecutive games in skeet shooting, and San José State graduate Marti Malloy garnered a bronze in Judo.
Other CSU notable participants include CSU Dominguez Hills alumna Carmelita Jeter, named “fastest woman in the world” for her time of 10.64 seconds in the 100-meter race; Cal Poly San Luis Obispo alumna Stephanie Brown Trafton, the first woman in 76 years to earn the U.S. gold in the discus throwing event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, who will try for gold again; and renowned CSU Long Beach alumna Misty May-Treanor, two-time beach volleyball gold medalist, who will also chase her third medal.
