Three Local Artists Take On Reality at Reese Bullen Gallery

The norm of reality can at times seem monotonous; three artists reinvent that reality through their art in Grasping the Obvious: Three Artists Examine the Commonplace, on exhibit at the Reese Bullen Gallery at Humboldt State University from February 17 to March 12, 2011.

An opening reception for the artists and public will be held on Thursday, February 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. Featuring the artwork of local artists Claire Joyce, Jeff Hunter, and Jesse Wiedel, this exhibit examines the commonplace by capturing and interpreting moments of everyday life through art. Joyce, who currently teaches drawing at College of the Redwoods, creates very personal works of art that “investigate the wit and grace which is capable of rising from the banal and ordinary.” Hunter’s artworks have grown out of his self-described “obsession with drawing people everywhere I see them.”

A third artist in the exhibit, Jesse Wiedel, has spent the last fifteen years making art in Humboldt County and finds this area to be “fertile ground for his interest in human folly and frailties.” In this exhibit, he shares a collection of his streetscapes which can be read as “satire, social criticism, or psychological horror.” All three of these artists express their unique points of view by focusing on the underbelly of society, domesticity, and those around us.

The Reese Bullen Gallery, located on the HSU campus directly across from the Van Duzer theater, is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 12-5 p.m.; Thursday 12-7 p.m. and Saturday 10-2 p.m. Admission is free.
