University Police Issue Crime Alert

Arcata – Humboldt State University Police have issued a crime alert and safety reminders in the wake of the alleged sexual battery of a female HSU junior that occurred Monday, Jan. 12, between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. on the west side of campus along L.K. Wood Boulevard, between Sunset and Granite Avenues.

University Police are circulating flyers in search of a white male, 30 to 35 years old, approximately five feet six inches tall, with a muscular build, short blond hair and wearing blue jeans and a white t-shirt. He was last seen driving a red, four-door coupe of unknown make or model.

The student told investigators the suspect drove alongside her, honking and waving, as she walked alone on the east sidewalk of L.K. Wood Boulevard. He sought to engage her in conversation, invited her into his car and subsequently got out on foot to meet her face to face. He persisted in the encounter and allegedly reached out and briefly squeezed the student through her clothing, which constitutes a misdemeanor act of sexual battery under California law.

According to investigators, the student eventually extricated herself from the encounter and proceeded to her destination, while the suspect returned to his car and drove away. No weapons were brandished, police said. In accordance with state law and UPD policy, the student’s identity is being withheld.

To date, police have been unable to identify the suspect, and Crime Alert flyers have been distributed across campus; anyone aware of the identity of the man or with information about the alleged attack is asked to dial UPD at 826-5555 or email hsupd@humboldt.edu.

Police issued the following safety tips:

-Walk with a friend or in groups in well-lighted areas.

-Be alert to potential dangers.

-Report suspicious activity to the police immediately.

-Take cognizance of where campus courtesy telephones are located.

-Never divulge personal information to strangers.

-Prepare psychologically in advance never to accept a ride with a stranger.
