Wildlife Students Take Home Quiz Bowl Gold

Humboldt State Wildlife students took home another gold this year at the Wildlife Society’s annual quiz bowl competition Oct. 16 in Portland, Ore.

HSU students beat out teams from around the country in the daylong event, which pitted HSU against the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry in the closing round.

The final match saw Humboldt State trouncing SUNY ESF, with a winning score of 150-70. The all-star team consisted of Phil Chaon, Justin Demianew, Justin Purnell, Alisa Muniz and alternate Will Lawton.

Participating schools included the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point; the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Paul Smith’s College in Brighton, NY.

HSU Wildlife students have a long tradition of national quiz bowl victories. “Our continued success is due to the hard work and preparation of our students,” says Wildlife faculty member and team adviser Barbara Clucas.

Every year, a handful of Humboldt State Wildlife students participate in a 3-unit course to prepare for the competition. The twice-weekly class includes student presentations and mock quiz bowl tournaments. Sixteen students attended this year’s Wildlife Society conference. The annual event includes the quiz bowl, panel discussions and professional networking opportunities.
