Work on Track at New PE Facility

The next several months will be devoted to installation of the roof system and installation and construction of the swimming pool at Humboldt State University’s new $42.8 million Physical Education Facility.

Next steps also include completion of the second and third floor “rough-in” (including framing and utilities) and the installation of building finishes. Phase 1 of the project is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2008 by Kiewit Construction Company, including work in Union Street and Fieldhouse Lane.

Demolition of the natatorium, along with installation of the new Redwood Bowl Plaza and minor renovations to the existing West and East Gyms, is set for spring/early summer.

A series of milestones has been achieved on the main structure, including completion of all structural steel, roof metal decking, near-completion of site concrete and paving, midway-completion of exterior framing and near-midway completion of second and third floor rough-in.

“Construction is moving along at a very good pace,” said Traci Ferdolage, Project Manager. “In coming months we will complete the roof system, exterior skin and glazing. Much of our progress will not be as noticeable to the public, however, as we will begin finalizing interior work, in an effort to complete the building in as timely a manner as possible.

“We’re also working hard to ensure the cherished ‘East Gym Advantage’ carries over into the new building,” Ferdolage added.
