HSU FILM PRESENTS FILMMAKER’S SHOWCASE
Remember the film Escape to Nowhere? Black and white war film, made in 1962. Or Fighter Squad or Firelight? Maybe you've seen these films but more likely you've never even heard of them. But chances are you have heard of the filmmaker, a guy named Steven Spielberg. These three are among Spielberg's first films. It's fascinating to see these films now and look for the early indications of the special talent of Spielberg. If we had only known what these early works would lead to--if only we had enjoyed the opportunity to view these works--you never know what could happen.
Fortunately, the HSU Filmmaker’s Showcase presents just such an opportunity--films by emerging filmmakers in a theater near you. September 30 in the Van Duzer Theater to be exact. It's a rare chance to watch the creative work of tomorrow's cinematic storytellers. Students have been making films at HSU since the beginning of the Humboldt International Film Festival fifty years ago in 1967. Film became a major in 2013. Today's students work in 16mm and High Definition Digital Video (HD).
According to Film Professor Ann Alter, the Showcase features select student films and videos completed over the last two years, including works by beginning, intermediate and advanced students. One example of the films to be screened is the documentary film Medicine Water (directed by James Simmons) featuring the late Jim Tobin (1949-2016) and his quest to purify our water in Arcata. Some of the films have won top awards at the California State University (CSU) Media Arts Festival--a competition of work from eighteen CSU campuses around the state.
"For the student filmmakers, it's a great opportunity to have their work shown in public. And it's a great opportunity for campus and community members to experience this work first hand. Please join us in supporting these talented young directors, writers, cinematographers, sound designers, editors, producers and actors," explains Alter.
The Filmmaker’s Showcase takes place in the Van Duzer Theatre in the Theatre Arts building on the HSU campus in Arcata at 7pm on Friday, September 30. Admission is free. Parking is free on campus on Friday nights.
