A Long Winter's Nap: How to Keep Busy over Winter Break

The end of the semester isn't the end of happenings at Humboldt State or the community at large. Humboldt State NOW is taking a look at the next few weeks and it turns out they're brimming with holiday activities sure to keep you warm before classes start back up on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

Host an International Student

HSU’s International Program’s Office has plenty of opportunities for community members to open their homes to international students this season. Share your holiday traditions and learn some new ones at the same time. Contact the International Office to learn more.

Basketball Hosts Debeni Classic and More

HSU men’s basketball hosts the Debeni Classic in the new Lumberjack Arena on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 19 and 20. The women’s team also takes on the Academy of Art team in a special 2 p.m. game on Dec. 20. League action continues with both men and women in back-to-back games against San Francisco State and CSU Monterey Bay on Jan. 2 and 3. The squads then hit the road in early January, returning for another set of games against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernadino on Jan. 16 and 17. For full coverage of all these games, visit the HSU Jacks, and watch Humboldt State Tonight on Fox 28 (cable channel 2) every Thursday at 6 p.m.

World Class Entertainment at HSU and the Community

CenterArts’ season keeps rolling after a short break over the holiday with the latest creation from the award-winning Imago Theatre on Tuesday, Jan. 6. Biglittlethings is a visually stunning mask-and-movement spectacle set in a fantastic world where seeing is not necessarily believing. Wearing elaborate masks and costumes (but without speaking a word), six performers conjure up a stage full of magical critters and creatures. With its lively music and fabulous lighting effects, Biglittlethings is a production guaranteed to stretch the imagination.

On Friday, Jan. 9, Bobby McFerrin uses his superhuman vocal powers to transform himself into a one-person, five-piece band. McFerrin has been called a true Renaissance man—a vocal explorer whose voice can replicate the sound of almost any instrument. Perhaps best known for his number one hit song Don’t Worry Be Happy, McFerrin has a wide range of musical accomplishments under his belt, from conducting classics and composing operas to collaborating with Chick Corea and Yo-Yo Ma.

CenterArts rounds out the winter break with a performance by Loudon Wainwright III on Jan. 17. Known for his superb songwriting talents, this artist has more than 20 albums to his credit. Visit the CenterArts Web site for more information about these artists and where to buy tickets.

Nut Cracker and other Holiday Treats

The Arkley Center for Performing Arts hosts North Coast Dance’s presentation of the timeless Nutcracker. You can catch the last two performances of this holiday treat on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 16 and 17.

As always, check out the North Coast Journal and Humboldt Music for more information on what do with your free time and a little help planning your new year’s eve bash.

Get Out and Explore

Humboldt is ways to get outside and enjoy nature. Try some disc golf, explore kayaking or become more aquatinted with our area’s hundreds of miles of trails. For the beach lovers, Friends of the Dunes continues their guided walks over the break docent-led trips to the Manila, Ma-le’l and Lanphere dunes.
